Week 707 - Port San Luis Photo Collection - 03-01-2020
Port San Luis Photo Collection
Port San Luis is on the northern side of San Luis Obispo Bay. This is one of our favorite places to stay. And a place where we have met so many relatives and friends. Local friends from San Luis Obispo County and RV friends from around the USA. We knew about Port San Luis as we had our first date here on the beach. However, we did not know about the RV sites.
On the south end of the bay is Avila Beach, our favorite beach town. It is clean, well kept with great restaurants and shops. Ellen's best friends Janet and Brad are strolling on the beach.
Our dear friend Paula, here with her father, is the one who told us about RV parking on the "jetty" shown on the right. The jetty is the best spot in the world to park. It is surrounded by water on three sides and big enough to hold six RVs in a six pack formation. There are "customs" to follow when you arrive as it might require four RVs to move to allow the first two to get out. Everyone talks and determine who is leaving and when. Then you shuffle the RVs to put those staying the longest in the front. These interaction forces everyone to meet up and then the fun begins.
Here is another view of jetty showing the close quarters. We always appreciate a large RV site. On the jetty on one side you are packed tight, but the other side is endless. Paula chats with Ellen and Janet.
The birds are always floating or stalking around you.
1) Past neighbors and USA RV travelers, Ben and Sid. 2) Paula with Ellen's sister Janice and Frank.
We met Tom and Patty on the jetty in 2010. Their motorhome is the front-right one. They were "crew leaders" for our stay, had the nice fire pit for all to enjoy and Patty even drove to town to buy the group desserts. A lovely couple that we have stayed in touch with for 10 years. They are currently living in Indiana.
1) Sheryl and Ed are RV friends. We met Sheryl in Indio, California at Motorcoach Country Club in January 2007. We met again in Burien, Washington, here and later in Desert Hot Springs. 2) Lauren and Jeanette are 8-time "meet ups". This 7th visit was in their 55 foot motor yacht as you will see next.
After a nice visit on their yacht for the afternoon, Lauren paddled the dinghy back "home".
A second dry camping spot is Nobi Point. While not as cool as the jetty, it does have nice views of the ocean.
Coastal Gateway has 8 sites with 50 amps and water. As of 03-2020 the daily rate is $85 per night, about the highest we have ever paid. However, dry camping is $65! So it is only $20 more for partial hookups.
The Olde Port Inn was established in 1972, a year before Ellen met Pete. We had dinner there in 1973, a wonderful seafood dinner. Sadly it closed its doors in January 2020.
But the live seafood is still hanging around the pier.
These sunrise pictures of the dolphin fountains show how lighting can change in a just a few minutes.
Heading south on your bike you reach the town of Avila Beach in just 1.5 miles.
We stayed overnight at Port San Luis and in the morning parked the MotherShip in Avila Beach. Yes, we did parallel park between that car and trailer. Nailed it on the first try! We came to be blessed when our son Nick married Hayley on the beach.
1) The site of our first date on August 3rd, 1973. Fittingly we arrived at the beach on Pete's Honda CL175 Street Motorcycle. 2) On our 40th Anniversary, August 3rd, 2014, we arrived in the MotherShip with the Burgman 650 Road Scooter on the back. We've really changed!
The remaining photos show just how beautiful this area is and why we chose it as our website background.
Our beloved Paula passed away in 2013. And the "jetty" is no longer available for RV parking. Both were lovely and are missed dearly.
With love, Pete, Ellen and Mandy
