Oceans, East Coast Photo Collection

Our 2007 trip to the eastern states was fabulous. Our route took us across Texas to Galveston. From there we stayed as close to the oceans as could all the way to Vermont. These photos bring back fond memories. This is a tough trip to do again as it took eight months to give each state just a little bit of our time.

Our first glimpse of the ocean was in Galveston. We took our first ferry ride from Galveston to Port Bolivar, Texas. This 2.7 mile trip was free in 2007, considered part of the Texas road system. Having no idea if a ferry could hold the MotherShip, we called the Dept. of Transportation. "Of course, semi-trucks and trailers use the ferry".

Cruising through Biloxi, Mississippi in 2007 still showed the devastation of Hurricane Katrina from 2005.

The four-mile Pensacola Bay Bridge takes you from Pensacola to Santa Rosa Island and beaches.

In 2007 we traveled 19 miles on the island only to find out the bridge back to the mainland was out. Oops, no GPS update. We had to back up over one mile to find a solid surface to turn around. Nice to have big mirrors and a backup camera.

Beautiful view from the Panama City, Florida Elks Lodge. This was 2007. From our best research today it appears that the lodge is now closed.

1) Mexico Beach, Florida. 2) Star fish from the beach in Fort Lauderdale.

Lovely little Delaney enjoying the view from the Fort Lauderdale pier.

1) In an attempt to stay close to the Atlantic Ocean, we took Florida route A1A onto a barrier island. Seeing the "Pavement ends 1000 feet" sign, we looked for a turnaround spot. Slowing down an angry man yelled "stay off my property, you guys are always ruining my driveway". We replied that we were not looking to use this driveway. Then he nicely removed the chain from his neighbor's driveway and told us to use it!

Pawley's Island, South Carolina. 1) The pier/beach. 2) We posted this 2nd photo before but wanted to see if Melissa could remember her comment from 2007.

Bridge to the Atlantic Ocean from Holiday Trav-L Park in Emerald Isle, North Carolina.

View from the MotherShip front window of whatever you might call these as we passed over a high bridge. Somewhere between Emerald Isle and Cedar Island, NC on Highway 70. This is one of the few photos that we cannot positively identify the location.

Our second ferry was from Cedar Island, NC to Ocracoke, Outer Banks. We were allowed to stay in the MotherShip for the 20-mile long ride that cost only $212.55. Those towing pay more; yay for the ScooterShip!

Temperatures vary from the cold and windy Chesapeake Bay Bridge, Virginia to the warm beach at Ocean City, Maryland.

Ocean City, Maryland boardwalk.

The Statue of Liberty on Liberty Island in Upper New York Bay. The island is a federally-owned part of New Jersey but controlled by New York City.

Harbor in Mystic, Connecticut.

1) On our trip through Rhode Island, this photo was taken from a long distance. We intended to visit Providence but the "Tall Ships" gathering dissuaded us from trying to park in the city.

2) The Cape Cod Canal is a man-made channel made by dredging the existing tidal rivers. Cutting seven miles through a narrow neck of land, it saves 135 miles from travel for mainland visitors to Cape Cod.

This is Provincetown, Massachusetts; not sure what this pantie parade was about.

Fourth of July, 2007 at Burlington, Vermont. The city and the celebration are on Lake Champlain. Not the ocean, but it's too late, this travelogue is over!

We'll be back next week with Oceans of the West.

With love, Pete, Ellen and Mandy
