Motorcycle Carriers

Obviously, you need to have a way to carry your scooter or motorcycle. There are dozens of available carriers. The Suzuki Burgman 650 weights 550 pounds.

You will need the carrier and it will require modifications to mount it on your motorhome. And you will need straps to hold it on. Fixed carriers require you to power your motorcycle up a ramp to load it. Powered carriers will lift the Motorcycle and are easy on your back! Here are the alternatives for hefty scooters, listed from best/most expensive to the cheapest.

Hydralift HL4288: The king of lifts. Pros: This hydraulic lift lowers to the ground and raises your scooter higher than any other. The higher you raise it, the cleaner it stays. Cons: Price is $5,200 (01-2020) and expect to pay $1500 or more to have it installed. The hydraulic pump will take away room from storage compartment.

Mighty Hauler: For a diesel motorhome this hydraulic lift comes in two models, one a manual pump at $2,150 and the electric pump for $3,050. To tow a vehicle up the 6,000 lbs, you will need the Three Point Hitch for $260. Pros: This lift lowers the ground without having to disconnect your vehicle tow bar. As such you can take your scooter for a ride without the hassle of tow vehicle disconnect! Cons: Prices as shown (02-2020) and expect to pay $500 installation if you need the Three Point Hitch to tow a vehicle. We have installed this lift. Before purchase, please contact us for advice; you will avoid headaches!

Cruiser Lifts: This electric lift lowers to the ground. Pros: Does not require room in a storage compartment. Cons: Price is $3,340 (01-2020) and installation will be around $1,500. After raising lift you need to crawl under and install a brace before driving.

Versahaul VH-SPORT RO: This is the ramp we would choose. It is a fixed carrier with a ramp. You must power the scooter up a ramp to load it. With the automatic transmission, this is not a problem. And priced at $669 (01-2020), it was easy on the wallet.

However, we paid $500 for installation and modifications. The carrier mounts only on your trailer hitch. It is rated for 600 lbs. To allieve our fears of wobbling, we had two more 1 1/4 inch receivers added, the tie down bars lengthened and the ramp strengthened. For at total of $1,169 versus $4,500 to $6,000, we are pleased. But note that you need some strength and agility to load the scooter. Usually Pete and Ellen load the scooter, but at times Pete has loaded it by himself, but only if absolutely necessary. We recommend one of the power lifts and will probably convert to one as time goes on and muscles weaken!

Tie Down Straps: We found some very cool retractables. They eliminate the need to tie off the ends and save you a lot of time.
