Week 204 - The Brookgreen Gardens Photo Collection - 07-11-2010
Brookgreen Gardens, Murrels Inlet, South Carolina:
In 1931, Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington established Brookgreen
Gardens to preserve the native flora and fauna and display objects of
art within that natural setting. The gardens occupy what was formerly
the Oaks, Brookgreen, Springfield and Laurel Hill rice plantations
Today, Brookgreen Gardens is a National Historic Landmark and a display
garden with the most extensive collection in the world of figurative
sculpture in an
outdoor setting by American artists. Many of the
sculptures were created by Anna. (Above description is from their website
www.brookgreen.org)
This sculpture is on Highway 17 at the entrance to the Gardens between
Murrels Inlet and Pawley's Island, South Carolina.
The long entrance drive gives you a sample of the enormous and
beautiful landscaping.
This covered area has human figurative sculptures.
This section is for pets and other animals.
One of the many reflection pools in the gardens.
The raising of the US Flag.
A replica or rebuilt cabin used by the indentured servants.
Colorful living salamander statues peering at the birds.
Ladies relaxing in the sun.
Fido rests while some weird dude rides the telephone pool.
Another sample of the endless acres of landscaping.
"Now, that's what I'm talking about!"
These gardens will take several days to see and appreciate everything
and
fortunately your pass is good for seven days.
Again, we are hoping soon to sign with a renter so that we may bring
you fresh travelogues. We would appreciate your prayers.
Love, Pete and Ellen
