Week 188 - River Walk Collection - 03-21-2010

The River Walk Collection:

Being near water just makes people happy!  And thus many cities create river walks for people to meander along the city's river.  Here are just a few that we have visited.  Each one has it own design and personality.

Pueblo, Colorado: The City of Pueblo has diverted water from the Arkansas River to flow through the city.

1) With beautiful walkways along each side, the river walk is a nice afternoon hike in the sun.  2) The shaded stage is used for concerts on the river.

The river walk is near the City Hall and police station, both with architecture that rivals the nearby hotels.

The walk is lined with a few restaurants and shops, waterfalls, trees and statuary.  Pete demonstrates a blocking technique, where it definitely helps to be taller!

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma: This river walk along the BrickTown Canal is similar to Pueblo's.  It is the center of attraction for the BrickTown area of the city.

Both Pueblo and Oklahoma City offer boat tours of the river.  However, neither is so long that you can't walk it in an hour or two.

On the left is Sonic, "America Drive-In".  While Ellen had a fine Mexican meal at Abuellos, Pete waited for a burger.  He entered this huge Sonic building only to find out that this is their corporate headquarters and they do not sell food.  However, so many people have come in expecting a meal that Sonic corporate did build a non-Drive-In restaurant right next door. Hmmmm, burgers!

These pioneers approach the river for a crossing.  Ellen greets them all including the rabbit with large ears and a friendly disposition.

Fountains, the BricktTown stadium (home of the Oklahoma Redhawks baseball team, Toby Keith's "I Love This Bar & Grill" restaurant, a duck and a nearly bald guy pushing a bald guy pushing a ball.  Wow!

Carlsbad, New Mexico:  The Pecos River flows through Carlsbad.

This river walk is a more natural setting than Pueblo or Oklahoma City.

The Conference City, parks and boat rentals are available.

Whitewater Canyon, Gila National Forest, New Mexico:  Okay, this is not a city river walk, but it is so cool, we had to include it.  This canyon is 65 miles north of Silver City, New Mexico.  The walls of the canyon are steep in much of the canyon.

The hike is 1.1 miles in length one way.

The hike consists of trails cut into the hillside, bridges, stairs, boulders, walks under overhanging cliffs . . .

and massive cantilevered walkways suspended off the canyon walls.  This hike is worth the drive.

Savannah, Georgia:
River Street in Savannah is a hub of excitement.

Free ferry rides, live music . . .

art, gift and food vendors line the walk along the river.

San Antonio, Texas: The Coup de Grace of river walks.  Notably the most famous of river walks is the San Antonio River Walk.

Water from the San Antonio River was diverted to create this fabulous area.  The river is bordered by shopping centers, office buildings . . .

shops, restaurants, hotels, taverns and more.  Be sure to enjoy the $38.00, 44 oz Strawberry Margarita.  We DIDN'T but borrowed it for this photo.

Every one of these river walks is very enjoyable.  If you get a chance, be sure to experience them.  If not, we'll send more photos.

Thanks for traveling with us, until next week.

Love, Pete and Ellen
