Camping with 30 or 20 amps

Electrical systems vary from brand and model of motorhome. This procedure works with our 2006 Monaco Diplomat, which has the Smart EMS (Energy Management System).

With 50 amps you should be able to run everything at the same time: Two air conditioners, refrigerator, microwave, lights, TV as well as charging your batteries.

With 30 amps you can run only one air conditioner, refrigerator, lights and TV. You may not be able also use your microwave or BULK charge your batteries while you are running the air conditioner.

With 20 amps you can run one air (maybe) or the microwave or BULK charge your batteries. And maybe you can run the refrigerator at the same time as one of these.

Amperage Usages
LCD TV 3 amps
CRT TV 1.5 amps
Refrigerator 4.5 amps
Microwave 8.5 amps
Computer 3 amps
Coffee Maker 11 amps
Flourescent light 0 .1 amps
15,000 BTU Air Cond 18 amps

So you get to an 30 amp RV park, its very hot and your batteries have been drained by the inverter while you were traveling. You need to BULK charge the batteries and you want to run the air. What do you do?

1. Now that you are plugged in, you don't need the inverter. Turn off the charging system to wait for later. The refrigerator will automatically run on electricity. Turn off the electric water heater. Turn on one air conditioner. When you need the use the microwave, with EMS it will shut down the air and restart it with the microwave is done. Without EMS, manually turn off the air and restart it when the microwave is complete. When the home is cooled down, turn off the air and start the charging for the batteries.

2. You might be able to slow charge the batteries and use the air conditioner. To do this, press the 30/20 select button to tell your system that you have only 20 amps. This will lessen the amps used to charge the batteries and might allow the air to run at the same time. If not, run your refrigerator on propane to gain a few amps.

Your EMS system will show the total amps being used. The maximum available will be 30 amps plus or minus a few amps.
